Obagi vs ZO Skin Health: Which Is Right for You?

Obagi Medical and ZO Skin Health share a founder, Dr Zein Obagi, but they are now separate companies with different approaches. Obagi is best known for structured systems like Nu-Derm and for Professional-C vitamin C serums. ZO focuses on what it calls skin health restoration, with an emphasis on stabilising the skin and reducing inflammation. Both are professional ranges sold through clinics. The right one depends on your skin and your goals.
One founder, two companies
Dr Zein Obagi qualified in medicine at the University of Damascus in 1972 and later moved to the United States. In 1985 he developed the Obagi Nu-Derm System, one of the first skin health programmes sold through doctors.
His company, founded in 1988, was sold to an investor group in 1997 and renamed Obagi Medical Products. Dr Obagi left the business in 2006, and in 2007 he founded ZO Skin Health in Beverly Hills. Obagi Medical has continued to develop its own products since, including the Professional-C, Elastiderm and Hydrate ranges.

Choose Obagi if you want
- A structured programme for pigmentation or uneven tone, such as Nu-Derm Fx
- A potent L-ascorbic acid serum in a choice of strengths (Professional-C 10%, 15% or 20%)
- Targeted products for firmness around the eyes and face (Elastiderm)
- A simple routine you can build one product at a time
ZO may suit you if you want
A routine built around ZO's daily exfoliation and skin stabilising philosophy, and you are happy to commit to its full programme. If you already use ZO and like your results, there is no need to switch.
Can you switch or mix the two?
Yes. Many clients use products from more than one professional range. The key is to introduce one active product at a time and avoid doubling up on exfoliants or retinoids. If you are moving from ZO to Obagi, bring your current products to a skin analysis and we will plan the switch with you.
Where to start with Obagi
For brightness and antioxidant protection, start with Professional-C Serum 15% in the morning. For lines and texture, add Retinol 0.5 at night. For dark spots and uneven tone, ask about Nu-Derm Fx. Finish every morning with Sun Shield SPF50.

Obagi vs ZO Skin Health: Your Questions
Is ZO Skin Health better than Obagi?
Neither is better for everyone. Obagi suits people who want a structured system for pigmentation or ageing, or a single proven product like Professional-C. ZO suits people drawn to its skin health restoration approach. The best choice depends on your skin, which is why we start with a skin analysis.
Did Dr Zein Obagi create both Obagi and ZO Skin Health?
Yes. He developed the Obagi Nu-Derm System in 1985. His company was sold in 1997 and renamed Obagi Medical Products. He left in 2006 and founded ZO Skin Health in 2007.
Can I use Obagi and ZO products together?
You can, but introduce one active product at a time and avoid doubling up on exfoliants or retinoids, which can irritate the skin. Bring your current products to your skin analysis and we will help you combine them safely.
Do I need a prescription for Obagi?
Most of the Obagi range does not need a prescription, including Professional-C, Elastiderm, Hydrate and the hydroquinone-free Nu-Derm Fx system. The original Nu-Derm System includes prescription steps and is only supplied after a consultation.
